Expressing oneself through the written word is fulfilling, creative and challenging. Writing is a very personal art form that allows individuals to tap into their own styles and inner beings. For a very few, this is a natural and innate talent, but for most of us, this expressive art form needs to be inspired, nurtured and practiced.
DeltaArts and Mid-South Community College are pleased to present their annual Young Author’s Symposium—a comprehensive experience for fifth and sixth grade language arts students that explores the art of writing and storytelling.
This year the Young Author’s Symposium will be lead by story-teller and writer Donald Davis. Davis is an award-winning storyteller with a very personalized approach and technique and is a long time friend of DeltaArts. The four hour symposium will include listening to Davis tell some of his original stories (both humorous and poignant) followed by an exercise in breaking down and examining characters.
Using the gained knowledge, students will then be given the opportunity to write their own stories and participate in small group critique exercises followed by personal time for changing and refining. Stories will be collected, and a committee will read them all, selecting stories for publication in the DeltaArts Anthology. Teachers will also have the opportunity to participate in a separate break-out workshop with Mr. Davis focused on personal writing and inspiring student writers.
Additional information is available through your school’s Gifted and Talented Coordinator.
Space is very limited, so contact your school’s GT Coordinator, call DeltaArts at 870.732.6260 or email Amelia Barton at abarton@crittendenarts.org to ensure that your young authors can participate.
Deadline for school registration is Thursday, October 1, 2009.
